How resource nodes actually work

Sota7 does not scatter ore randomly across the hills. Every mineral you need sits at a fixed, pre-marked point of interest, and those points respawn on timers. Two independent launch-week player reports describe the same system: resources live at dedicated POIs that refill quickly, which is why one reviewer joked that if you want more silver you crawl into the same cave again and again. Treat that as a community-observed mechanic, not an official spec sheet — the developers have never published respawn timings — but the behavior is consistent enough that you can plan around it.

The practical upside is huge: once you have found a deposit, you own it forever. The map tracks each node and shows a live quantity readout, so a healthy graphite vein reads something like Quantity 15/15 while a depleted plant source shows 0/8 until it regenerates. There is no need to memorize cave layouts or screenshot coordinates. Your real job is the first discovery sweep of each zone, because after that the game hands you a shopping list with addresses. The Engineer mode setup screen even exposes material occurrence multipliers, which confirms the node-density system is a real, tunable layer under the hood.

Reading the map, pinning, and AR mode

Your two best friends on any mining run are the map pin and AR mode. Open the map, find the resource marker you want, and pin it so a pointer guides you overland — this is the intended way to hunt things like copper, which early players kept losing because they wandered without a pin. Hovering a blueprint and pressing Q pins its material checklist to your HUD, so you can see exactly what a recipe still needs while you are out in the field. Quests pin the same way through Tab, Journal, Quest, then Q.

AR mode is the other half of the loop: it highlights deposits and scan targets in the world itself, which matters because the tutorial famously tells you to find titanium with no marker at all. One warning from launch week: the map filter UI is buggy. Players report that toggling one resource filter, say copper, can hide or reveal unrelated ones like titanium. If a deposit you know exists stops showing up, reset your filters before assuming the node moved. It did not move. The UI is just having a moment.

Titanium and the Ancient Titanium deposit

Titanium is your first ore and the spine of the early game. The opening quest chain sends you out to find it, and a large early deposit is flagged in-fiction as Ancient Titanium. The in-game reasoning is explicit: your tools should be crafted out of something durable, and titanium is ideal. The chisel, trowel and pruner line of early tools is gated behind it, and each finished tool weighs about 0.50 kg, so you will feel the kit in your pack. Get titanium first, get tools second, and only then start thinking about serious expeditions.

The catch is guidance. The tutorial step arrives with no marker, at night for some unlucky players, and at least one reviewer fell three times in the dark during this exact objective. Do not brute-force it in the black of night. Sleep or wait for daylight, open the map, look for the nearest titanium POI in the Valley, pin it, and let AR mode do the close-range work once you arrive. The Valley is classified low risk and most species there are more curious than aggressive, but tripping off a ledge in the dark does not care about zone classifications.

Bauxite and the aluminium chain

Bauxite is the friendliest ore on Sota7. A developer answer from the demo era describes it as quite common, with one deposit not far from the pod, and reminds players that you need a chisel to gather it. That proximity is deliberate: bauxite is the raw input for aluminium, and aluminium feeds construction, so the game parks your first supply within walking distance of where you wake up. If you skipped it on day one, go back — the deposit respawns, so there is always more waiting.

The blueprint logic around bauxite is worth understanding because it applies to every ore. In the developer's own words: to craft aluminium you need to find bauxite on the map, after that you can focus on building your base and discover even more blueprints, and some blueprints unlock by collecting particular plants and other resources. In other words, first contact with a new material expands what IVS offers you. That is why grabbing one unit of everything new — even when you have no recipe for it yet — pays off faster than stockpiling fifty units of something you already understand.

Magnetite and graphite: the rocky-country run

Magnetite and graphite share terrain, so farm them as one route. Guide-site routing puts graphite in rocky areas and along stone walls, with magnetite found closer to the volcano in the middle of the map — the same volcanic landmark where strider nests sit. Both ores feed your most important early crafts. The Drone Builder, the tool that unlocks base building when you equip it and press B, costs 3 Carbon Fiber, 5 Magnetite and 1 Wiring Kit. The Hover Generator that deploys your hoverboard costs 3 Titanium, 3 Magnetite and 3 Carbon Fiber. Graphite goes into the IM Pump I alongside 3 Mars Filoy, 3 Green Naga and 1 Silver.

Plan the run as a loop, not a shopping trip. Pin the magnetite cluster nearest the volcano, sweep the stone walls on the way for graphite, and grab shed strider horns around the natural nests while you are in the neighborhood — you will want those for fertilizer later. The zone classification puts this kind of terrain on the Valley-to-Headlands gradient, so expect the local wildlife to get more assertive as you push inward. You are not carrying weapons, because there are none; the injector tranquilizes, it does not kill. Scan from a distance, detour around packs, and keep moving.

Copper and the Wiring Kit problem

Copper rarely gets top billing, but it quietly gates the mid-early game because it feeds component chains — most painfully the Wiring Kit. That single crafted component shows up in the Drone Builder recipe, and you cannot assemble your first real base without the Drone Builder. Launch-week forums have a steady drip of Where is the copper threads, and the answer is always the same: it is on the map, it is a marked POI, and you need to pin it and follow the pointer instead of wandering and hoping.

The component-chain logic is the thing to internalize. Honeycomb loves a raw-to-component-to-device pipeline: copper becomes wiring, obsidian becomes carbon fiber, bauxite becomes aluminium. When a recipe looks impossible, the missing piece is usually an intermediate you have not crafted yet, not a raw material you have not found. Check the pinned checklist on your HUD, work backwards from the device to the components to the ores, and your route writes itself. And if copper vanishes from your map entirely, remember the filter bug from earlier — toggle filters off and on before you accuse the planet of hiding things.

Silver: the cave you will learn by heart

Silver is the ore that teaches you how Honeycomb hides things. The deposit behind the early silver marker sits inside a cave with a crouch-height entrance — the map marker gets you close, and then you stand there confused because there is no visible rock to chisel. Crouch, squeeze through, and the real vein is inside. This is a pattern worth remembering for the whole game: markers are approximate, entrances are sneaky, and the Headlands officially contain caves and dungeons in the developers' own words, so interior deposits are a feature, not an exception.

You need silver for two things that matter early: the Filter for your Water Dispenser, which turns river water into drinkable hydration, and the IM Pump I, your first Immunity Pump for longer expeditions outside sealed bases. Because nodes respawn, this silver cave becomes a scheduled errand — and it is exactly the cave from that player joke about crawling into the same hole again and again. Our advice: batch your visits. Craft the Filter and the IM Pump I in one trip's haul rather than commuting twice, and use the waiting time between respawns to run the magnetite-graphite loop instead of standing outside the entrance watching rock not regrow.

Obsidian, carbon fiber, and the west coast

Obsidian — volcanic rock in the in-fiction phrasing — is the raw input for carbon fiber, and carbon fiber shows up in both the Drone Builder and the Hover Generator, so you cannot postpone it forever. When the quest logic pushes you toward it, IVS points Hennessy at volcanic rock in a coastal area to the west of the start. Follow the marker, chisel out, and process it into carbon fiber back at your crafting machine. That one trip, combined with magnetite and a Wiring Kit, is what turns base building on.

The volcanic theme is bigger than one node. Marketing and survey material describe vast fields at the foot of a mysterious volcano, magnetite clusters near it, and strider nests on its slopes, so the volcano region works as a mid-game resource hub in general. Expect the approach to get rougher — the zone ladder runs Valley (low risk) to Headlands (mixed danger, more assertive predators) — and kit up before you go: full stomach, full hydration, herbal tea in the bag, and an Immunity Pump if you have the silver for it yet. Obsidian runs are the first expedition that genuinely rewards preparation.

Tools of the trade and non-mineral materials

Extraction is tool-gated, so no route works without the right kit. The chisel handles minerals and ore, the trowel digs up buried minerals — the devs teased it years ago with sometimes you have got to dig deeper — and the secateurs take botanical samples, while a separate sampling device collects genetic material from flora and fauna. Each tool weighs 0.50 kg and has durability, which is why the titanium-tools step matters: sturdier kit means fewer mid-route breakdowns. Carry the chisel and trowel on mineral runs, the secateurs on plant runs, and everything when you are exploring somewhere new, because Sota7 loves putting a gorgeous unknown herb next to your ore vein.

Do not tunnel-vision on rocks. Some of the most valuable crafting inputs walk, waddle or shed. The survey logs credit Lucuma Camilla wool, Imperial Strider shed horns, Bronze Wox and Azurite Lonebid fur, Thessalika Nango shed scales, Gum Nibis feathers, Wild Green Zuma secretion and Skittertail biological samples as real crafting resources — several collected without harming anything, which fits the no-kill design. Horns for fertilizer, lying around strider nests, are the example you will hit first. Plants pull weight too: Sweet Tarax stems feed textile crafting, and Headlands species like Green Naga and Ebony Linter are poisonous raw but process into early and mid-tier recipe materials. A good route grabs all three categories in one loop.

Load management and honest unknowns

Mining is a logistics game. Carry capacity is 50 kg, Hennessy stops moving entirely when over-encumbered, and the developers have admitted they reworked item weights because heavy ore was breaking the early game. Quest items cannot be dropped and weigh 0.5 kg each, so your free capacity is always less than the number suggests. Crafting pulls from storage only while you are inside a building, which means expedition hauls should be consolidated indoors. Use lockers aggressively, and gather biologicals last — plant materials rot fast even after Hotfix #1 halved inventory decay, while ore waits patiently.

Now the honesty section. Confirmed minerals so far: titanium, bauxite, magnetite, graphite, copper, silver and obsidian, with demo-era reports also mentioning chalk, lead and silicon from meteorites. One reviewer mentions half a dozen metals, but the complete roster and every respawn timer are simply not published anywhere we can verify — we have not confirmed exact refill durations, node counts per zone, or whether deeper zones add new ores beyond this list. Community reports suggest fixed timers; treat any site claiming exact minute values with suspicion. What we can promise: nodes are fixed, marked, and they come back.
