Ore is where the ceiling starts to bite. The developers flagged this exact friction back in a 2024 devlog: managing your inventory is part of the challenge, and they called out carrying very heavy ore specifically, noting they had adjusted some item weights as a compromise. So treat mining runs as dedicated trips, not something you bolt onto a botany afternoon. A pack already holding tools, food, tea and plant samples has maybe half its budget left for titanium and magnetite — and magnetite runs toward the volcano are exactly the kind of long walk where being overweight stops being an inconvenience and becomes a standstill, literally.

Overweight means immobile — not slowed, stopped

Most survival games punish encumbrance with a speed penalty. Honeycomb skips the gradient. Per the official post-Next-Fest devlog, Hennessy will simply stop moving if she is over-encumbered. Full stop, in the field, wherever you are. If that happens deep in a rocky magnetite run, your options are dropping valuables on the spot or waddling nothing at all — and while dropped items do seem to persist in the world (players report seeds left near the landing pod never despawned), a pile of ore dumped two biomes from base is still a pile of ore two biomes from base.

Prevention is entirely a planning habit. Check the weight readout before you leave a node, not after you have stripped it. Learn the rough cost of your fixed kit — tools, injector, food, drink, a pump — and consider that your permanent spend; the remainder is the trip's harvest budget, and when it is gone, you go home. If you find yourself overweight anyway, dump the lowest-value-per-kilogram item first: common Sweet Tarax seeds and bulk plant fiber before ore, ore before tools, tools never. And no, there is no pack-mule option — this is a solo expedition, and the hoverboard is a ride, not a cargo rack.

Phantom weight and the quest-item quirk

Two weight quirks are generating launch-week forum confusion, and you should know both before you file a bug report. First: storyline and quest items cannot be dropped, and they weigh about 0.5 kg each. That purple statue from the Mystery Beacon cave and similar mission objects are permanent passengers until their quest consumes them. There is no stash option for them, no drop button — they ride with you, so budget for them on long trips rather than discovering the tax mid-expedition.

Second: the mystery of the phantom kilos. One player with literally everything moved into storage still showed 19/50 kg on the readout, and the thread never resolved why. The plausible explanations are that equipped gear and worn tools count toward weight, or that the readout is bugged at launch. Either way, the practical takeaway is the same: your real available capacity is lower than 50 minus your backpack contents, so leave headroom. If your displayed weight ever seems wrong, unequip everything and watch the number change; you will quickly learn what your own loadout costs. Expect a patch note about this eventually — it is exactly the category of thing the day-one hotfix already touched.

Lockers: build them early, build several

Demo players hit a genuine wall of confusion on storage: one asked whether they were supposed to just drop items on the floor at the base, because no container presented itself. In the full game the answer is lockers, and they are some of the most valuable furniture you can place. Storage is not just tidiness — it is safety. Anything in a locker cannot be dropped in a death bag, cannot decay as fast in your pack while you sprint around, and does not count against your 50 kg. A box does not panic, as one fan wiki puts it.

Build more lockers than you think you need and specialize them. One for ores and components near the Fabricator, one for plant materials and seeds, one for expedition food and meds. There is a second reason for that last one: the trash can unit is bugged at launch and reportedly does nothing at all, with the developers aware. The community workaround is a dedicated junk locker — a separate locker just for stuff to toss, in one player's words. It is inelegant and it works. When the trash can gets fixed you can retire it; until then, the junk locker is your landfill with a door.

Crafting from storage — indoors only

One of the launch build's most praised quality-of-life features is that crafting machines can pull materials straight from your storage — multiple reviews call it out as a nice touch, and it transforms base life. No more shuttle-running eight stacks of graphite from a locker to the machine one inventory at a time. Queue the craft, let it draw from the base's stockpile, and go do something else while the in-game hour ticks by. Just remember the oldest gotcha in the game's short history: finished items stay inside the machine until you manually collect them.

There is an important boundary, though: players report crafting-from-storage only works while you are inside the building. Exterior work — expanding the base, placing outdoor utilities — requires fetching materials from storage into your personal inventory first and carrying them out. So big outdoor construction sessions start with a deliberate loading phase; check the blueprint's pinned material list (hover a blueprint and pin its checklist to your HUD), fill your pack to just under the safe threshold, then build. And update your game: Hotfix #1 fixed a hard crash triggered when crafting tried to track items from a storage that no longer existed. Deleting a locker with queued crafts pointed at it was a guaranteed bad evening before that patch.

The indoor-pull rule also reshapes where heavy things should be made. Component chains run deep in this game — obsidian becomes Carbon Fiber, Copper becomes Wiring Kits, and the devices built from them (the 0.80 kg Drone Builder, the 1.00 kg IM Pump) are exactly the items you do not want to haul home in pieces. Craft at base, from storage, whenever the option exists. Field-crafting a heavy device out of field-gathered components feels efficient and quietly converts your remaining carry budget into dead weight for the entire walk back. Let the base's stockpile absorb the mass; that is what it is for. One more storage-side caution from launch reports: a player lost most of a grow operation to a base-edit bug, so save before major renovations — manual saves are cheap, rebuilt farms are not.

The decay clock on everything organic

Now the mechanic that made launch week spicy: organic items spoil, and they spoil on a timer players describe as real-ish hours rather than in-game days. One player summarized the launch tuning as food not lasting a few days in game but a few hours. Harvested plants, fruit and biological crafting ingredients all tick down while they sit in your inventory — which collided badly with the exploration loop, because the game constantly tempts you to pick one more plant on the way to somewhere else. At launch tuning, that plant was compost by the time you got home.

The studio responded fast. Hotfix #1, shipped September 9 — one day after release — states that items carried in your inventory now degrade over time about half as fast as before. That is a huge, immediate change to how the game feels, and any guide numbers written before September 9 are stale. Even post-fix, the correct habits are the same, just less frantic: harvest biologicals as close to when you need them as possible, craft perishable recipes promptly after gathering, and treat long detours with a pack full of plants as a donation to the soil. Scanning an unripe plant shows a regrowth timer, which makes scheduled harvesting genuinely practical instead of aspirational.

Preservation options and their limits

The game does give you preservation tools — with asterisks the size of Sota7. A food preservation can exists as a craftable item, and its intended use is turning unspoiled fruit into long-term storage. The problem: players cannot figure out how to load fruit into it. One thread reports crafting the can, finding no way to put fruit in it, and getting no options when placing it; another thread's title jokes that players appear to be eating cans instead. Whether it is bugged or just opaque is unknown as of day three. Do not build your food strategy around canning until a patch or a confirmed method appears.

What actually works today: lockers slow the problem by getting organics out of your carried-decay pipeline, the Cooker converts perishable raw plants into meals and drinks you consume on a schedule, and the world itself is weirdly generous — dropped items appear not to despawn for a very long time, possibly ever, so an emergency cache on the ground is a legitimate tactic. There is also a nuclear option: Engineer mode includes an explicit Organics Do Not Decay toggle that simply switches the whole system off. If spoilage pressure is the thing that would make you bounce off this game, that toggle exists for you — but world settings are locked at creation, so it is a decision for your next save, not your current one.

Seed clutter and other bulk byproducts

The strangest weight problem at launch is not ore — it is seeds. Sweet Tarax (players call it sweet grass) drops seeds so generously that one player reported sitting on seven full stacks with no use for them. Seven stacks of anything is a meaningful slice of a 50 kg life, and seeds are the classic trap item: individually weightless-feeling, collectively a ballast problem, and psychologically hard to throw away because they are technically valuable. They are not. You need a planting reserve, not a seed museum.

The triage rules that work: keep one or two stacks of each seed type in a dedicated locker at base and process or ditch the rest. Community reports say excess plant material has real sinks — sweet grass can be processed into sugar, and rotted plant parts plus unplanted seeds become biomass for fertilizer — so before you trash anything, check whether your composter-adjacent crafting wants it. The junk locker (your workaround for the bugged trash can) is the final destination for everything else. Apply the same discipline to other bulk byproducts: scan-everything runs generate mountains of low-grade samples, and the players with tidy bases are the ones who decided what a stack is for before picking up stack number eight.

An expedition load routine that survives contact

Pulling all three systems — weight, storage, decay — into one routine looks like this. Before leaving base: eat and drink, deposit everything not needed for this specific trip into the appropriate locker, and assemble a lean kit of tools, injector, one pump, a little food, a tea. Know your fixed-kit weight and your remaining budget. In the field: harvest food plants late in the loop rather than early, since every minute they spend in your pack is decay; grab ore early instead, because rock does not rot. When the weight budget is spent, go home — no exceptions, because the alternative is an unplanned yard sale on a hillside.

Back at base, the reverse ritual: perishables to the Cooker or their locker first, ore to the materials locker, junk to the junk locker, crafts queued from storage while you sleep. Forward-looking players add one more layer — a fan wiki suggests small shelter-plus-storage outposts at biome borders for late-game zones, which plays nicely with both weight limits and sealed-space immunity recovery, though we have not verified outpost storage behavior in the release build ourselves. And the standing caveat for everything above: exact per-item weights, precise post-hotfix decay rates, and whether equipped gear counts toward the 50 kg are all unverified as of September 10, 2026.
