Everything you do on Sota7 eventually funnels back into one room. The publisher's own launch copy calls the laboratory the heart of your base, and that is not marketing fluff. Crossbreeding flowers through Allogamy, grafting tree branches, propagating hybrid seeds, processing harvests into food and materials: all of it happens in or around your grow infrastructure. Get the greenhouse wrong and every later system stalls, because you cannot experiment with plants you cannot keep alive.
The good news is that the checklist is short. A functional growing setup in Honeycomb: The World Beyond needs exactly three support systems: water, power, and bees. The developers demonstrated the full loop in Dev Update #9 with a rig of grow pod, water pump, solar panel, and bee pipe, and that same skeleton carries you from your first Sweet Tarax seeds all the way to lab-only hybrids like the Cloudbeam Lumus. This guide walks through each pillar, then covers the Grow Bed upgrade, the growth cycle, and the mistakes that are currently tripping up launch-week players.
Pillar one: water
Plants need water to grow, and in practice that means a water pump feeding your grow pods. Site your base near a water deposit before you place a single pod. Rivers work, and underground deposits work too, but the key word is near. Every meter between your pump and your pods is friction you will feel dozens of times per session, and moving a built lab later is painful because of the deconstruction trap covered below.
Treat water access as the one part of your greenhouse that is load-bearing. If a pod loses water, the plant inside does not pause or wilt gracefully. It dries out and dies, and you lose whatever rare seed or hybrid progress was sitting in it. That is a real loss when the pod held, say, a Pass-zone specimen you spent an expedition collecting. Before you touch any structure near your irrigation line, read the section on deconstruction further down. It is the single most common way players are killing their own crops right now.

Pillar two: power
The solar panel is the second pillar. It powers your base as a whole, and that includes the grow pods and the water pump itself. No power means no pump, and no pump means dead plants, so electricity is indirectly a water problem too. When you expand the lab, expand generation in the same building session. A bigger greenhouse draws more, and the failure mode is silent: everything looks fine until the growth cycle stalls.
There is a practical ordering tip here. Place the solar panel and water pump before you commit seeds to pods, then verify the loop is actually running before planting anything you cannot replace. Herbs like Sweet Tarax are forgiving test subjects because they hand you produce and seeds together on harvest, so a failed first run costs you nothing. Save the one-of-a-kind specimens, the fruit you hauled back from the Headlands or the Pass, for when the infrastructure is proven. Fan-wiki advice lines up with this: keep pods powered and watered, and do not gamble rare stock on an untested rig.
Pillar three: the bee pipe
The bee pipe is the piece new players skip, and it is the piece that makes crossbreeding possible at all. The developers describe it as a tractor that funnels bees into the lab, and bees are the key agent in Allogamy, the cross-pollination mechanic for flowering plants. Pollen moving between plants is what creates new variations and species in the fiction, and the game literalizes it: no bees in the lab, no hybrid sprouts, no matter how perfectly you paired two Solum-family flowers in one pod.
So the full minimal crossbreeding rig, exactly as shown in official material, is grow pod plus water pump plus solar panel plus bee pipe. Build all four before you plant a breeding pair, not after. Remember the core constraint while you plan space for it: Allogamy needs two different plants from the same family sharing one grow pod, and it only fires while both are actually in bloom. Herbs add a wrinkle, since they die and vanish at full maturity, so you want the bees in place early enough to catch the earlier flowering stage while there is still a free spot in the pod.
Grow pods versus Grow Beds
Grow pods are the classic lab container: you plant seeds in them, run experiments in them, and harvest by hand. The Grow Bed is the newer cultivation structure, introduced in Hive Update #14 late in 2025, and it changes the economics of farming. Its selling point, in the developers' own words, is that it helps you cultivate and automatically gather plant products. Working sprinklers are visible on the structure in-game, and there are two versions of the Grow Bed, both with sprinklers.
What exactly separates the two Grow Bed versions, and where the functional line sits between beds and pods, is not yet confirmed in the launch build. Community reports suggest beds are the mass-production option while pods remain the precision instrument for breeding work, and that division of labor matches how the structures are described, but we have not verified the details. The safe play: run your Allogamy pairs and grafting output in pods where you control every variable, and shift staple crops you harvest for food and materials onto Grow Beds so the sprinklers and auto-gathering do the chores.
Stocking the greenhouse: what to plant first
Your first crops should come from the Valley, the low-risk starter zone the official survey log calls your laboratory before you even build one. Sunbeam Lumus is the anchor: a fruit tree of open clearings and loam-type soil whose sweet, persimmon-like fruit quenches thirst reliably. The log's advice is collect it early and often, and remember the launch-build quirk that fruit trees do not drop seeds by default; use the left-click context menu's get seeds option to start your orchard. Sweet Tarax is the second staple, a common herb whose curled leaves are nutritious and whose long fibrous stems feed textile crafting. Because it is an herb, every harvest returns produce and seeds together, so a Sweet Tarax bed is self-replenishing and nearly impossible to ruin.
After the staples, add crops whose collection is the risky part, because growing them at home removes that risk forever. Ice Bonebell carries a minor healing effect but grows in the Red Forest close to predator nests; one dangerous run secures seeds for a lifetime of safe harvests. From the Headlands, Cobalt Sargent is a safe cave herb that brews into a tea carrying IM-X immunostimulant properties, genuinely useful for longer field trips. Green Naga and Ebony Linter are both poisonous raw, so only bother planting them once your processing chain is ready; Dev Update #10 showed the Cooker making even toxic plants edible. The Pass species, Earth Filoy, Prism Nut and friends, are endgame stock. Do not risk those seeds in an unproven rig.
Scan first, process second, plant third
The research pipeline has a strict front gate: scanning is the entry point for everything. A species needs its database entry, name and warnings included, before specimens can properly be sampled, processed or grafted, so scan every new plant on sight. Collection is equally specific. The developers showed in Dev Update #9 that each flower and fruit must be collected with a dedicated tool, scissors, because they do not want you to damage it. Herbs are simpler and get pulled straight out of the ground. Trees offer two resources at once: fallen fruit to eat or process, and a branch you can cut as a grafting scion.
Processing is the middle step that turns field loot into greenhouse stock. Per the same devlog, each flower, fruit and herb can be processed to procure seeds you can plant in grow pods, with herbs again the exception since they skip processing entirely. Fan wikis wrap the whole loop as Observe, Extract, Replicate, Combine; the four-step wording is fan-made, but every step matches official devlog footage. The practical takeaway for your greenhouse routine: nothing enters a pod raw. Scan it in the field, collect it with the right tool, process it into seeds, and only then plant. Skip a step and the game will quietly refuse to cooperate.
Reading the growth cycle
Every plant has its own growth cycle; the developers synced them all for a devlog demo and explicitly warned players not to expect that in the real game. The states you will observe, pieced together from official material and launch-week player reports, run inactive to growing to blooming or flowering to harvestable. Trees drop their fruit on the ground when fully grown. Herbs are the odd ones out: at full maturity they die and disappear from the pod, so harvest them on time.
Two tools make the cycle manageable. First, scan a plant that is not ready and the scanner shows a timer for when it will fruit again, so you never have to guess. Second, you can sleep to skip time, either in a bed or a sleeping bag placed right next to the plant you are waiting on. One caveat from the launch build: some players report plants getting stuck in the inactive state after blooming, and the developers have replied in that thread that the relevant quest is meant to teach you to observe the growth cycle and harvest at the right stage. Whether it is a bug or a misunderstood mechanic is not settled yet.
The deconstruction trap: how plants die
Here is the warning the developers themselves spelled out, and it deserves its own section: when deconstructing structures, try not to remove water access from the grow pods, because without water the plants will dry out and die. This is not an edge case. Remodeling your base is something you will do constantly as new devices unlock, and every wall or pipe near the irrigation line is a chance to silently cut a pod off. The plant gives you no dramatic alert. It just dies.
Build a habit around this. Before any deconstruction session inside the lab, walk the water line from pump to pod and confirm what depends on the piece you are about to remove. If you must reroute, build the new line first and tear down the old one second. And if a pod is holding anything irreplaceable, a hybrid mid-experiment or the only seeds of a Headlands species, harvest or relocate the contents before you touch a single structure. Thirty seconds of paranoia beats another trip to the Red Forest for Ice Bonebell growing next to a predator nest.
Decay, seeds and greenhouse housekeeping
Picked plant parts decay. Flowers have a limited lifespan away from the branch, and at launch the rot felt aggressive enough that Hotfix #1, live around September 9-10, slowed inventory degradation to roughly half speed. There is also an organic decay toggle in the settings if you want it gone entirely, confirmed by players restarting with it off. The greenhouse angle: do not stockpile fresh flowers and fruit in a chest as your long-term seed bank. Process them into seeds promptly, because seeds are the stable form of a plant.
Seed handling has its own quirks in the launch build. Fruit trees do not drop seeds by default; left-click the plant, open the context menu, and pick the bottom option to get seeds. Herbs skip the processing step entirely and give produce plus seeds on harvest. Players are also reporting seed over-abundance, one farmer mentioning seven stacks of Sweet Tarax seeds, and dropped seeds apparently never despawn. Feed the surplus into biomass production for fertilizer rather than letting it litter the lab floor, and your housekeeping problem becomes a yield upgrade.
A pre-planting checklist
Before any seeds go in, run this in order. One: base sited near a river or underground water deposit. Two: water pump placed and connected. Three: solar panel placed, with enough generation headroom for every pod you plan to run. Four: bee pipe installed if any crossbreeding is on the agenda. Five: a dry run with cheap herb seeds to prove the loop grows, blooms, and harvests. Only then plant anything rare.
During operation, keep three habits. Scan unripe plants instead of guessing at timers. Sleep through long growth windows instead of idle waiting. And never deconstruct anything near the water line without tracing dependencies first. Do all of that and the greenhouse stops being a chore and becomes what the design intends: a quiet machine that turns field expeditions into new species. The official Valley survey log said it best: the Valley is your laboratory before you even build one, so scan everything, and give the results somewhere safe to grow.
