How crafting works in Honeycomb

All crafting happens at machines, not from a pocket menu. Your landing pod has a basic crafting machine, and it carries you through the tutorial crafts until you build the Fabricator inside your first Multi-Room. Crafts take real in-game time: the known early recipes, the Drone Builder, the Hover Generator for the hoverboard, the IM Pump I, all run about one in-game hour each. There is a fabricator animation playing in the world while it works, which is a nice touch, but most of the interaction is menu-driven. Queue the job, go do something useful, come back.

The part that trips everyone: when a craft finishes, the item stays in the machine. You must open the machine and take it out manually, then equip or store it. Day-two forums are full of players convinced a recipe vanished when it was actually sitting in the output slot. Build the collect-it-yourself habit on day one and you will never join them. Also note what the machine accepts: it draws from your inventory, and under the right conditions from your storage, which brings us to the system's biggest convenience and its biggest caveat.

Crafting from storage, and its limits

Honeycomb lets you craft directly from storage containers, a feature reviewers singled out for praise, and it changes how you should organize your base. Build lockers early and route everything into them. One important caveat, reported consistently by launch players: crafting from storage only works while you are inside the building. The moment you step outside to place exterior utility structures or expand the footprint, the game expects you to fetch the materials from your containers by hand first. Plan build sessions accordingly: stage everything you need in your inventory before you walk out with the Drone Builder equipped.

This system was also the source of the launch build's headline crash. Crafting a recipe whose tracked materials lived in a storage unit that no longer existed could shut the game down, until Hotfix #1 on September 9 fixed it. Two organizational lessons follow. First, think twice before deleting containers mid-project; if you must, clear your crafting queue first. Second, the trash can furniture is bugged at launch and does nothing, so players keep a dedicated locker as a junk drawer instead. Not glamorous, but neither is a corrupted save.

The Fabricator: your first interior machine

The Fabricator is the first machine to put inside your Multi-Room, and guides rank it as the top interior priority because everything after it depends on crafted components. Honeycomb's item economy is a chain: raw resources refine into components, components assemble into devices. The Drone Builder recipe is the perfect illustration, asking for Carbon Fiber and a Wiring Kit rather than raw rocks. In-fiction, Carbon Fiber comes from obsidian, the volcanic rock IVS points you toward on the coast west of the start. Wiring Kits pull you into the copper economy. Each new device quietly teaches you a new branch of the resource map.

The confirmed early recipe list, per day-two guide sites, looks like this. Drone Builder: 3 Carbon Fiber, 5 Magnetite, 1 Wiring Kit, one in-game hour, 0.80 kg. Hover Generator, the hoverboard: 3 Titanium, 3 Magnetite, 3 Carbon Fiber, one hour. IM Pump I, the basic Immunity Pump: 3 Mars Filoy, 3 Green Naga, 1 Silver, 3 Graphite, one hour, 1.00 kg, rated for minimal environmental resistance on short expeditions. Early hand tools, chisel, trowel, pruner, are titanium-gated crafts at 0.50 kg apiece. Treat these exact numbers as guide-tier, plausible and consistent but not yet datamined, and always cross-check the in-game recipe card.

Cooker and Multi Cooker: the kitchen branch

The Cooker is your food-and-drink station, and the developers describe its job with pride: it makes even toxic antus edible, "tasty like a gourmet meal." That matters more than it sounds, because Sota7's flora loves a nasty surprise. Headlands staples like Green Naga and Ebony Linter are poisonous raw, and processing is not optional. The Cooker also produces the drinks that manage thirst beyond raw fruit: smoothies, tea, and energy drinks, plus herbal tea, which doubles as the light tier of medicine. If you are only going to keep one interior machine fed with fresh ingredients, make it this one.

Later in progression the Multi Cooker appears as the upgraded kitchen appliance. The developers teased its redesign in a 2025 dev update, joking that "we all remember what our multicooker used to look like," which confirms both that it exists and that it got a visual overhaul before launch. What the exact functional split between Cooker and Multi Cooker is in the release build, nobody has documented yet; treat the Multi Cooker as the mid-game kitchen expansion and expect it to matter once your recipe book grows past smoothies. Gather biological ingredients last before a cooking session, because plant materials rot fast even after Hotfix #1 halved the decay rate.

The aid station and staying patched up

Medicine comes in two tiers, and the split is station-gated. Light meds, herbal tea being the canonical example, are Cooker work: quick condition boosts for minor scrapes. Advanced meds, with bandages and painkillers named as examples, require an aid station. The developers' framing is that the bigger injuries need proper equipment, and their advice is blunt: always keep healing items on hand, because risking critical condition is almost never worth it. Since Honeycomb's version of death is a knockout, waking up later with lingering performance penalties, the aid station is how you avoid the long, miserable limp home in a weakened state.

Build order-wise, the aid station is not day one. Day one is the pump, turbine, room, door, Fabricator sequence, with the Cooker close behind. The aid station enters the picture once Headlands expeditions start handing out real injuries, falls in the dark, territorial wildlife, the works. A related interior machine worth planning for in the same phase is the Water Dispenser, which turns river water into clean drinking water but needs a Filter, and the Filter needs Silver from that crouch-height cave deposit. Group the errands: one good silver run feeds both your hydration and your healthcare.

The Laboratory: where the game actually happens

If the Fabricator is the base's hands, the Laboratory is its brain. Official marketing tells you to "build advanced bases with laboratories," and the lab is where Honeycomb's signature systems live: grafting branches onto host trees, running allogamy cross-pollination between flowering plants, and mutating fungi in experimental chambers whose parameters you adjust with gathered environmental samples. The developers deliberately kept the full lab machine roster mysterious pre-launch, saying they redesigned the lab stations but would not spoil the names of all the machines. Post-launch, the community is still cataloguing them, so expect the wiki answers to shift for a few weeks.

The lab does not work alone. Crossbreeding infrastructure means grow pods, and the official devlogs give their dependency list: a water pump, a solar panel, and the bee pipe that funnels bees into the lab, plus the warning never to cut water access to the pods or the plants dry out and die. Alongside pods sits the Grow Bed, a newer cultivation structure that automatically gathers plant products, sprinklers visibly running, in two confirmed versions. Practical advice from the community: keep parent stock and hybrid output in separate beds, and do not gamble rare specimens from The Pass in early experiments. A failed compatibility check costs you the attempt, not the lesson. Day-two guides already describe the first cross-pollination experiment the quests walk you through: Ebony Llinter plus Ivory Llinter in one bed, an estimated growth cycle of a few local days, and a firm requirement to leave a free slot in the bed, because that empty slot is where the hybrid sprout appears. Fill every slot with parents and your experiment has nowhere to be born.

IVS and the blueprint database

Here is how tech progression actually works, and it is not a tech tree screen. The Steam store page says it outright: "IVS will provide you with blueprints needed to live comfortably and efficiently." IVS is the mission system that talks to Hennessy, generates compass markers, and hands out construction knowledge as the story and your fieldwork advance. Nobody has confirmed what the acronym IVS stands for, and there is a late-game story achievement titled "Learn the truth about IVS," so the system is apparently holding secrets. What we know functionally: quests award blueprints, and the database grows with your exploration.

The growth mechanic is collection-driven, and this is confirmed from two directions. A developer reply on the Steam forums explained that finding bauxite on the map unlocks aluminium crafting, and that "some of them can be unlocked by collecting particular plants and other types of resources," advising players to watch the in-game journal. Demo-era gameplay footage had Hennessy's own voice line: "Collecting new plant and ore samples will let me adapt my blueprint database to local resources." So scanning and gathering are not side activities; they are the tech tree. Whether blueprints have formal tiers or branches beyond quest and collection gates is genuinely unknown as of launch week. One blueprint award is confirmed by name in official patch notes: the developers state Hennessy receives the blueprint to craft Immunity Pumps, equippable items that raise your Immunity and buy longer expeditions outside the sealed base. When a system this important arrives by blueprint rather than by store shelf, you understand why every new plant scan matters.

Pinning with Q: the habit that saves your sanity

The blueprint system has a killer UI feature that the tutorial undersells: hover any blueprint and press Q to pin its material checklist to your HUD. The pinned list follows you into the field, turning a vague errand like "build a Water Dispenser" into a live shopping list: Filter, therefore Silver, therefore that crouch-height cave. Quests pin the same way through Tab, then Journal, select the quest, then Q. The Building Minion quest literally asks you to pin a blueprint, and Hotfix #1 added a safeguard so the quest can no longer arrive while your Blueprints screen is still locked. The developers consider pinning core enough to patch the game around it.

Make pinning a reflex and half the game's friction evaporates. Pin a blueprint before you leave base, and you will gather exactly what the recipe needs in one trip instead of three. Pin copper on the map and the pointer walks you to the deposit. Pin the quest alongside the blueprint and you always know whether you are gathering for the mission or for your own ambition. Players struggling with weight limits should note the synergy: a pinned checklist tells you what to leave behind, which matters when your carry cap is 50 kg and quest items are undroppable. Inventory discipline starts with knowing the list.

Progression pitfalls and launch-week notes

A few traps to close. The analyzer errand confuses new players: the quest says to get the analyzer out of the ship, and some find only the option to craft one with no resources. Check the pod thoroughly before assuming you must craft it. The titanium tutorial sends you out with no marker; use AR Mode and pin deposits yourself. Storage weight is opaque: one player showed 19 of 50 kg with an empty inventory, and whether equipped gear counts or it is a bug is unresolved, so do not trust the number blindly. And biological materials for lab or kitchen work rot in hours, so gather specimens last, craft promptly, and know that dropped items seem to persist if you must stash some in a pinch.

Zooming out, the honest summary of launch-week tech progression is this: the skeleton is confirmed and elegant, quests plus collection expand your blueprint database, stations gate the tiers from Fabricator to Cooker to aid station to lab, and Q-pinning ties it together. The fine numbers, station costs, full recipe lists, lab machine names, are still being mapped by the community, and some fan wikis are already publishing confident figures that do not survive scrutiny. This guide flags every uncertain number as such, and we will revise as datamines and patch notes land. Until then, trust the in-game recipe card over any website, including ours. One more launch quirk for the kitchen-adjacent crowd: the food preservation can exists, but multiple players report crafting one and finding no way to load fruit into it, with the placed can offering no interaction. Possibly bugged, possibly unintuitive; either way, do not build your spoilage strategy around canning until the community cracks it or a patch explains it.
