Plants get crossbreeding; animals get DNA

Plant bioengineering on Sota7 gets most of the attention, but the Steam store copy promises a second track: manipulate animal DNA to trigger fascinating physical changes, then experiment with different combinations and analyze the results. That is a real system with real completion goals behind it, and it works nothing like the plant side. No Allogamy, no grafting, no grow pods. Instead you are sampling living creatures, working their DNA in the lab, and breeding within a species to push coats and yields in directions nature did not plan.

Fair warning up front: this is the least documented system in the launch build. The game is two days old, official material never showed the animal lab UI, and fan wikis are extrapolating hard. What follows separates three confidence levels: what the developers have said on the record, what the achievement list proves exists, and what players report. Where nobody actually knows yet, this guide says so, because telling you the gaps is more useful than inventing a recipe that will waste your weekend.

The research loop: scan, extract, replicate, combine

The master loop for all bioengineering runs scan, extract, replicate in the lab, combine. For animals, scanning comes first and it is non-negotiable: scan various fauna to learn more about the world, per the store page, and cataloguing happens through a hand-held craftable scanner, a change the developers made in Hive Update #13 when they moved the job off a lab centrifuge. Hive Update #15 gave Hennessy's Analyzer a visual upgrade. Until a creature is scanned and in your database, treat everything downstream as locked.

Scanning itself is a skill check of patience, not reflexes. The official Valley survey log warns that the Wild Green Zuma is timid and easily spooked, and that getting a clean scan takes patience. The Valley log's own advice is the method: how a creature moves, where it rests, and what it does when it notices you will tell you more than any initial scan. Approach slowly, from the side, and stop moving when the animal's behavior changes. For anything territorial, the log says it plainly: scan from a distance.

Extracting samples with the sampling device

Step two is extraction, and official interviews name the tool family: specialized instruments including samplers or sampling devices, alongside the chisels and secateurs used for rocks and plants. A fan wiki that has been careful about flagging unverified claims describes the scanner's overlay classifying targets as Botanical, Geological or Genetic, with Genetic targets sampled for DNA and cellular tissue from both flora and fauna. That three-class framing is plausible and matches official tool names, but no official source confirms it, so treat it as a strong community lead rather than gospel.

One extraction rule matters for your health bar: aggressive animals may need to be calmed before you sample them. The same fan wiki advises tranquilizing hostile fauna before collecting genetic samples, and the official site independently confirms a tranquilizer weapon exists for dangerous creatures. There is no lethal option anywhere in the game, by design, so the injector is your only argument in a negotiation with, say, a threatened Bronze Wox pack. Community reports also confirm the launch-day reality here: one player could not get near the weasel-like wox or the stork-like Gum Nibis to scan them at all, and abandoned three bags of dropped items at a nest. Sample the calm ones first.

The roster you will be sampling

How many animals are there to work with? The honest answer is fuzzy. At GDC 2025 the developers said nine species of animals with subspecies, plus additional hybrids you can create. The three official Field Survey Logs name eleven creatures: four in the Valley (Lucuma Camilla, Wild Green Zuma, Gum Nibis, Scorchweaver), four in the Headlands (Imperial Strider, Bronze Wox, Woodback Tortoise, Flux Beetle), and three in the Pass (Azurite Lonebid, Thessalika Nango, Skittertail). Reconciling nine with eleven probably comes down to how you count the insect and the microfauna; the exact subspecies list is unknown.

Each species advertises its yield in the survey logs, which doubles as a breeding priority list. Camilla wool opens crafting options. Zuma's viscous secretion has real crafting value. Gum Nibis feathers, Imperial Strider horns, Bronze Wox fur, Azurite Lonebid fur and the Nango's shed rigid scales all carry recipe value. The Flux Beetle is harmless database filler, and the Skittertail is described as accessible biological samples for ongoing research, which sounds like the game's own suggestion for a practice subject. Since the Zoologist achievement asks you to study every animal, scan all eleven anyway; the database is the foundation the DNA lab builds on.

The lab side of DNA work

Between extracting a sample and breeding a result sits the Replicate step, and it lives in your base's laboratory. The official site describes the loop plainly: laboratory devices and grow pods do the work, drones help you build the lab, and water pumps plus solar panels keep it powered, the same infrastructure triangle the plant side uses. Demo players mentioned getting the analyzer out of the ship early on, which suggests the tutorial walks you into this equipment, but exact analyzer tiers are unknown.

Keep the Combine step's family tree straight, because plants and animals branch differently. Plants get three experiment types: Allogamy for flowering plants in bloom, Grafting for trees with its compatibility check, and Environmental Changes for fungi using experimental chambers. Official 2022 material split plant hybrids into formers, which change shape, pigment, parameters and behavior, and fillers, which change only pigment or parameters. Animals get none of that machinery: same-species pairing only, per the GDC interview. Whether the formers and fillers terminology survived into the launch UI is unconfirmed, so do not go hunting those words in menus.

When sampling goes wrong: the knockout safety net

Sometimes the animal declines to be sampled, violently. What happens next is softer than in most survival games: death in Honeycomb is a knockout. Your stamina or condition collapses, you black out, and you later regain consciousness with lingering penalties, having dropped some inventory and been returned to base. Players corroborate the launch build working this way, and status effects like bleeding and a sprained leg have been reported. It stings, but it is a lesson, not a game over, unless you chose Space Hell mode with permadeath, in which case you knew what you signed up for.

Prepare for sampling expeditions the way the survival systems expect. Dev Update #10 documented two medicine tiers, light meds made via the Cooker and advanced meds from an aid station, so carry the tier that matches the zone. An Immunity Pump extends your safe time outdoors against the alien atmosphere, which matters when a cautious approach turns a two-minute sample into a twenty-minute stakeout. And keep bag space in reserve: one launch player abandoned three bags of dropped items at a stork nest after a territorial Gum Nibis refused all diplomacy. Retreat is always a valid data point. Come back tomorrow with the injector ready.

The iron rule: same species only

Here is the constraint that defines the entire animal system, straight from developer Szymon Szymaniak-Gnaś in a GDC 2025 interview: because biology is biology, you can only cross animals that are from the same species. The team did not want to turn the science upside down, so crossbreeding between species is off the table. No Camilla-Wox chimera, no Nango-Zuma horror show. Hennessy is a bioengineer, not a cartoon zookeeper, and the design holds that line.

What same-species breeding produces instead is variation, and this is where the system gets interesting. The end result, per the same interview, is the same kind of animal but with really unique fur: different colors, and different properties on the unique items they give you. So a bred Lucuma Camilla is still a Camilla, but its coat may shift color and its wool may gain properties the wild population never offers. Scale that across every breedable species and you see the shape of the endgame: a ranch of designer ungulates, each line tuned for a specific yield.

Hybrid coats and what the Pass has to do with it

The rarest variation material lives in the endgame zone. The official Pass survey log states that Pass fauna contribute directly to the most advanced systems your research will demand, including hybrid species that are not available anywhere else on Sota7. Read that alongside the same-species rule and the picture is: your early breeding work happens on Valley stock, but the exotic coat lines and top-tier yield properties trace back to Pass creatures like the Azurite Lonebid and the Thessalika Nango, whose shed scales already carry crafting value in their wild form.

A second breeding note, this one from a 2023 Rock Paper Shotgun preview: animals will apparently crossbreed all by themselves if left to their own devices. That was a pre-release build and it is unverified in the launch version, so do not design your ranch around autonomous litters until players confirm it. The related question, whether tamed or hybrid animals can be released back into the wild to affect the ecosystem, was raised as open by the same preview and remains unknown. If either turns out true, ranching gets a lot more interesting; for now, assume you are doing the pairing work yourself in the lab.

The achievements are your roadmap

With no official bestiary or trait spreadsheet published, Steam's achievement list is the hardest evidence of what the animal DNA system contains. Three achievements sketch the whole arc. A new species, description: and it's hungry, sits at 9.1 percent of players and almost certainly marks your first hybrid creation, likely story-gated. Zoologist, study every animal, is at 1.5 percent. And Xeno zoologist, hybrid every animal possible, is at 0.6 percent, which proves two things at once: animal hybrids are a finite, completable set, and almost nobody has mapped it yet.

Use those percentages as a difficulty curve. If one in eleven players has made a first hybrid within two days of launch, the entry ramp is gentle and probably tutorialized through the main quest. The plunge from 9.1 to 0.6 percent is the real game: completing every animal hybrid demands the full species roster, lab throughput, and Pass access. Treat Zoologist as your midterm, since you cannot breed what you have not studied, and note that the botany side has twin achievements, Botanist and Xeno botanist, if you want the matching plant milestones.

Which animals to start with

Pick early subjects by temperament, not by what looks cool. The Woodback Tortoise in the Headlands is docile with predictable patterns, called one of the more cooperative subjects in the zone, ideal for early biological observation. The Lucuma Camilla is sociable and curious, one of the safest early study subjects, and tends to follow you once its interest is earned. The Wild Green Zuma is workable but spooks easily. All three let you practice the scan-sample loop without an injector argument.

Postpone anything with a warning label. The larger Scorchweaver variant is territorial and will react aggressively if approached; the survey log calls it one of the first genuine hazards in an otherwise forgiving zone and recommends scanning from a distance. Bronze Woxes coordinate as a pack when threatened. The Thessalika Nango is solitary and not easily won over, though the log hints the trust is worth building. And remember the custom-mode escape hatch: Engineer mode lets you disable animal aggression entirely, which turns dangerous sampling runs into pure research tourism if you are willing to play that way.

What we do not know yet

Honesty section, because this system is young. Unknown as of September 10, 2026: the exact lab devices and UI for animal DNA work, sample quantities required, mutation or variant odds, the full trait and coat catalog per species, and the complete breedable roster. The GDC interview mentioned nine species with subspecies plus creatable hybrids, while the three official survey logs name eleven creatures total, so even the headcount is fuzzy. No datamine has surfaced. If a site shows you exact percentages this week, it is guessing.

None of that blocks you from starting. The confirmed skeleton, scan everything, sample calm species, breed within a species for fur colors and yield properties, chase the achievement ladder from A new species to Xeno zoologist, is enough structure to play against. Log your own pairings and outcomes as you go, because the community spreadsheet that eventually cracks the trait catalog will be built out of exactly that. The lab UI questions will resolve within weeks; the animals are already waiting.
